I (Maja) am one of those people who has a straight-A personality. Someone who loves to make a list and keep a list for all things, wheater we are renovating a bathroom or planning a blog post. For years I have wanted to write a post about what goes on behind the scenes at Jernej Kitchen. To share more about our family and the exciting things we get to do every month. Today I am finally happy to hit PUBLISH while our 5-month-old has a 30-minute power nap.
January moments that made us happy
The snow finally came to visit our little land. We love taking walks and spending quality time outside as a family. So we couldn't be more excited about the new winter outdoor activities. I switched from the stroller to a carrier, as it was easier to go for a walk with Flin (our 5-month-old) as the roads weren't as clean.
It was time to say bye to our Christmas tree. We are one of those people who still have a Christmas tree and all the decorations up in mid-January. Our 2-year-old Adam LOVES Christmas, so we had to photograph him in front of the tree before adding decorations and before putting the tree down too.
We aren't on a diet. We love January, and January always encourages us to eat more vegetables. But by all means, we aren't fans of any diets. We keep a healthy balance between indulgent foods, and nutritious foods that are good for the body, and soup. So naturally, we still wanted to try the special Big Hood burger from our favorite burger joint, Hood Burger, and we definitely couldn't resist ordering hot chocolate.
It was time to make some homemade sausages. We are lucky enough to get high-quality pork, which we divide between three families. This year we made three types of homemade sausages, lard, ham, and many other delicious treats. It was our third year participating in this well-known Slovenian tradition of "koline", and we couldn't be more excited to learn more about it.
This happened as well...
BOOKS. I am currently reading “The Ink Black Heart,” a fantastic crime book by J.K. Rowling, also known as Robert Galbraith. I try to read for at least one hour every night when the kids go to bed. On BBC, you can watch the Strike series too. The actors are excellent, and the show is so well put together.
We were so pleased to get the new Taste of Travel cookbook from our friend Ursula Schersch. It's one of the most delicious cookbooks we have seen lately. There are so many amazing recipes to try, and we cannot wait to get to work. The book is written in German, but if you know at least a little bit of german, this book is well worth buying.
Jernej bought all the Marinka books he could find. You may not be familiar with these stories, but I grew up reading one book passed down to my brother and me from our parents. We loved it, and now Jernej bought so many for our kiddos. And each one was only 2 euros, how great is that.
TV. We watched the new docuseries Madoff: The Monster of Wall Street on Netflix, and we were unpleasantly surprised by the actions of some people. Gosh, the world can be a beautiful place, but it can also be a disgusting place.
One of our all-time favorite series New Amsterdam ended, and we weren't happy about it. This was one of our favorite shows, and it was so amazing to see the current world situations so well projected into the series. I will forever miss Iggy; he was such a great character.
SO EXCITING! 500.000 views on YouTube (currently 556.000 views). Reaching that many views was terrific, as so many hours go into making recipes and videos. We were happy to see this gorgeous Roasted Tomatoes Soup perform so well on the internet.
We were also incredibly excited to see our cookbook Epic-30 Minute Roasts in our local library. In Slovenia, the book is called Spektakularne jedi iz pečice.
Wishlist of the month
We need two things ASAP. The first is a high-quality Thermo bottle we can take on trips for our kid, and the second is a high-quality stand mixer. Believe it or not, we currently don't own one and need one stat. Which ones do you recommend?
