Delicious Canadian dish

Poutine (Fries with Gravy and Cheese)

Poutine is a delicious Canadian recipe made with french fries, gravy, and cheese. This irresistible main dish or snack is made in under 30 minutes.

Poutine (Fries with Gravy and Cheese)
Poutine is one of those dishes that has been on our radar for the longest, but we somehow didn’t get around to making it. We never tried the original version, but we saw it several times on the Internet, so we wanted to try it, especially with our local ingredients. For this homemade Poutine recipe, we need french fries, gravy, and cheese curds. Those are impossible to get in Slovenia, so we needed to improvise, and we love how it turned out.

Delicious French Fries and Gravy

These are the top reasons why we think you will make it over and over again:

  • the french fries are crispy and delicious
  • the gravy is incredibly luxurious, flavorful, and easy to make, and it melts the cheese beautifully
  • the whole dish is a beautiful combination of different textures and flavors
  • it takes about 30 minutes to make
  • great as a side dish, main dish, or snack

Essential ingredients

We won't need many ingredients, and we got all in our local favorite store, Spar. Below you will find the whole recipe with all the ingredients; here is a quick overview of the essential ingredients.

Chicken stock and beef stock - Both are essential for the gravy. They add so much flavor, saltiness, meatiness, and umami. Choose your favorite stock.

French fries - fry your favorite french fries until crispy and delicious.

Cheese - get cheese curds if possible. As they are impossible to get over here, we tested the recipe with halloumi cheese and mozzarella cheese. They both worked great and melted beautifully.

Chives - add some freshness and lightness.

Poutine Origin

Poutine is a beautiful main dish, snack, or side dish from Canada. It's so popular in Canada that it even got its place in Mcdonald's. It's made of three components. We need delicious, freshly fried french fries, gravy, and cheese curds. Cheese curds are impossible to get here in Slovenia, so we used a local substitute, halloumi cheese, and mozzarella cheese. It's essential to pour hot gravy over the cheese to start to melt. This delicious, surprisingly addictive dish is something that we cannot wait to make repeatedly.

Storing

We don't recommend story this dish, as the french fries must be freshly fried and crunchy. However, feel free to store the gravy. Place the sauce in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Before serving, reheat in a pan on the stove or in the microwave.

Simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Season the gravy with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper to taste. The gravy needs to have a creamy soup-like consistency. If needed, reduce the with some water. Set aside until needed.

Fry the french fries according to the package instructions. Line a wire rack with paper towels and add the fried french fries to drain any excess oil. Transfer to a bowl and season with salt.
