Homemade beef kebab is easier to make than you might think. All you need is ground meat, spices, and a few minutes for grilling. The result? Top-notch.
Kebab. A street food everyone knows, and one that can now be found in almost every town in Slovenia and other European countries too. Even though it’s not originally Slovenian, Slovenians still enjoy eating it from time to time. With this recipe, you’ll love preparing beef kebab at home as well. We don’t often try viral recipes, but this one completely won us over. Why? Because the kebab is made from ground meat, which is rolled out between two sheets of paper, then mixed with spices and grilled. The result? Beef that tastes just like it does at a kiosk serving this popular street food. So let’s get straight to the recipe.

A viral recipe that truly makes the preparation easier.
This isn't an authentic doner kebab preparation, but a great one nontheless.
Sometimes viral recipes are completely pointless, and other times they actually improve and simplify our cooking. This one belongs to the latter. These are the top qualities of this recipe:
Everything is under your control – the choice of ground meat, spices, toppings, and even how you serve it.
Simple preparation – a suitable recipe for beginners and for anyone short on time. You can make it during the week or on the weekend, for lunch or dinner.
A colorful dish – we like to serve it in a tortilla or flatbread. We add lots of vibrant fresh vegetables and the sauce to top it off.
The meat can be stored – simply put it in a closed container and quickly reheat it in a pan before serving.
Essential ingredients
This recipe uses simple ingredients that can be found in any Lidl. This recipe is sponsored by Lidl Slovenia, so we used only ingredients purchased from the nearest Lidl. We’ll also add a few more words about the ingredients and possible substitutions. As always, the full recipe is at the very end of the post.
Spices – The recipe includes several different spices, all of which are essential for properly seasoned meat. Don’t skip any of them, as they are key to achieving an authentic flavor.
Meat – We use ground beef, which is well seasoned, kneaded, and rolled out very thin between sheets of baking paper.
Sauce – You can use any sauce you like. You can choose one of the two options provided in this recipe or use both.
Vegetables – It’s important to choose fresh vegetables and add them to the flatbreads along with the meat and sauce. Vegetables provide freshness, crunch, flavor, and texture. We use onion, cabbage, cucumber, and tomato.
Flatbreads – We chose flatbreads from Lidl’s bakery, which are really tasty and soft. We like to toast them slightly to get a nicely browned exterior. You can also make homemade flatbreads or use tortillas if you prefer.
Storing and freezing
We always prefer to prepare homemade beef doner kebab fresh. However, you can store the cooked meat in the refrigerator, or even freeze it.
Store cooked (cooled) meat in a closed container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Before serving, reheat and quickly fry it in a pan.
Cooked (cooled) meat can also be frozen. Store it in a freezer bag or freezer-safe container. In the freezer, it will keep for up to 2 months. Before serving, thaw the meat, then fry it in a pan and use as needed.

preparation
Place the rack in the middle of the oven and preheat it to 220 °C (430 °F). Put the ground beef into a bowl. Add the spices. Peel the onion and finely grate it into the meat. Add the olive oil. Mix everything into a uniform mixture.
roast the meat
Prepare six sheets of baking paper. Place the first one on the work surface and add one-fifth of the meat. Cover it with another sheet of baking paper. Roll it out across the entire surface to get a very thin layer of meat. Remove the top sheet. Fold the shorter edge, about five centimeters wide, over the meat and repeat this process until you form a thin strip. Place it on a larger baking tray and repeat the process until you have five strips. Put them into the preheated oven and bake for 15–20 minutes at 220 °C (430 °F), or until golden, roasted, and juicy.
