We have been eating chicken once a week lately. We are short on time now that we have a baby at home, so chicken is a great choice. It’s delicious, prepared quickly, and there are so many delicious options. We are always testing and trying new things, especially when it comes to roasting in the oven. We spent the whole year testing recipes for our cookbook, and one of the recipes that didn’t make it into the cookbook were these delicious Sticky Chicken Wings. We forgot to include it in the last version of the manuscript, but we still wanted to share the recipe on our blog. These chicken wings are roasted in the oven and glazed with a beautiful homemade sticky sauce made of soy sauce, honey, and prunes. Naturally sweet, extra tasty, and best of all, made in just 30 minutes.

How to make sticky chicken wings in the oven

The preparation is super simple. Follow these steps to master this 30-Minute recipe:

  1. Place chicken wings in a bowl, and season well.
  2. Roast the chicken wings for 20 minutes in your oven. 
  3. Make the delicious sticky sauce
  4. Generously brush the chicken wings and continue to roast for a couple of minutes.
  5. Sprinkle the roasted Sticky Chicken Wings with sesame seeds.
  6. Serve with your favorite side dish.

Ingredients for roasted chicken wings

There are two components in this crispy oven baked chicken wings recipe. Chicken wings and sticky sauce. For the latter we will need:

Oil - Use vegetable oil, like canola. It's great for high-temperature roasting, and it's not overpowering.

Honey - Use real honey, floral, or acacia honey. They both have a subtle aroma and complement the dish beautifully.

Garlic - Adds a beautiful sharpness and flavor to the sauce.

Prunes - Use pitted prunes. They add an umami flavor and sweet, fruity flavor, and they thicken the sauce too. 

Soy sauce - Light soy sauce is the way to go for this recipe. It's not as intense as dark soy sauce. However, if you have a dark soy sauce at home, simply reduce it with some water and use it in the recipe.

Vinegar - Use white wine vinegar or rice vinegar. The vinegar will create a subtle sweet-sour flavor that will complement all the other ingredients beautifully. 

Sesame - Before serving, sprinkle with sesame seeds for some texture.

How to store oven-roasted chicken wings

These oven-roasted sticky chicken wings can be easily stored. Once they are completely cold, store them in an airtight container. Keep them chilled in the fridge for up to 2 days. Before serving, reheat well in your oven.

METHOD

  • prepare the meat

    Arrange a rack in the middle of the oven, then preheat your oven to 230 °C / 450 °F. Use a fan-assisted oven if possible. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Pat-dry the chicken wings on both sides. Place the chicken in a large bowl, and season with salt and pepper. Drizzle with canola oil, and toss well to coat evenly.

    Spread the chicken wings in a single layer on a baking sheet. Place in the preheated oven on the middle rack. Roast for 20 minutes at 230 °C / 450 °F.

  • sticky sauce

    While the chicken wings are roasting, make the sticky sauce. Add canola oil to a saucepan. Place over medium heat. Add the diced garlic, chopped prunes, light soy sauce, vinegar, and water. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 5 minutes. Transfer the sauce to a blender or immersion blender and mix into a smooth sauce.

  • Oven Roasted Sticky Chicken Wings

    Wearing protective gloves, carefully remove the baking sheet with the chicken wings from the oven. Pour the fat from the baking sheet and discard it. Place the wire rack on the top position in the oven while still wearing protective gloves. Change oven settings to low broil. Generously brush the chicken with the sticky sauce on both sides and return to the oven. Roast for 5 minutes on the top rack. Remove from the oven and brush with the rest of the sticky sauce. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve. Optionally serve with chopped scallions.
