Sweet fritters with chocolate
Sweet Fritters with Chocolate (Miške / Fritule) are a heavenly, quick Carnival dessert ready in just 20 minutes. These fluffy fried dough bites — known as miške in Slovenia and fritule in Croatia — are crispy on the outside, soft and airy inside, and served warm with rich chocolate sauce. Kids love them, and adults can’t resist them either. Perfect for Mardi Gras, Carnival parties, or whenever you’re craving an easy homemade fried treat.

This recipe is so simple that you will keep coming back to it time and time again

Miške and fritule are small pieces of sweet fried dough traditionally made during Carnival season across Central and Southern Europe. This is why we adore them:

  • The recipe is made without yeast, which means no waiting
  • The ingredients are simple — we almost always have them in the pantry or can buy them at the nearby Lidl
  • The fritters are very easy to prepare and are on the table in just 20 minutes
  • A fantastic dessert for Carnival celebrations and other festivities
  • The chocolate sauce makes them especially appealing to children and all chocolate lovers

Unlike yeast donuts, these fritters don’t require rising time, which makes them incredibly quick and beginner-friendly.

Tips and tricks

These are the steps we always follow when making fritters.

  1. Mix all the ingredients in a bowl with a whisk. There is no need to use any electric appliances.
  2. Let the batter rest for a few minutes before frying. In the meantime, heat the oil.
  3. Heat the oil to 170°C (340°F), checking the temperature with a thermometer. If the oil is too hot, the fritters will brown quickly on the outside but remain raw on the inside.
  4. To shape them, use two teaspoons to drop small amounts of batter into the oil. For a nicer round shape, transfer the batter to a piping bag and pipe it into the oil, cutting it off with scissors as you release it into the oil.
  5. Use milk or dark chocolate for the sauce — we personally prefer dark chocolate. It’s important to use good-quality chocolate, as it will make the flavor truly delicious.

Storing

These fritters are so delicious that they disappear in no time, and we don’t recommend storing them, as they lose their crispiness and flavor.

Pour the cream and milk into a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Add the chocolate and a pinch of salt. Stir until smooth, then remove from the heat and set aside for 5 minutes. After that, place in the refrigerator for 10 minutes.
