Ham Spread

Ham Spread or Ham Salad is a wonderful recipe for using leftover Easter ham. Spread it over crackers or bread and refrigerate for days.

Ham Spread
Easter holidays are quickly approaching, bringing joy, family gatherings, egg dyeing with the kids, and plenty of delicious food. When it comes to Easter brunch, we tend to prepare similar dishes each year. However, one thing we haven’t tried is making a leftover ham spread or salad. But this all changed this year. This is a convenient way to use up the excess ham that we always seem to cook too much of. This recipe takes just 15 minutes from start to finish, and you can refrigerate it for up to 5 days, which is incredibly useful.

A delicious way to use Ham Spread

This spread is so well-balanced and delicious. These are the top reasons why we recommend making it:

  • easy to use leftover ham, but worth cooking the ham for this recipe alone
  • everything is done by your food chopper or blender
  • perfect to use in sandwiches, spread over crackers or bread
  • a fantastic recipe for breakfast, brunch, snack, or festive appetizer
  • gluten-free recipe (choose a gluten-free bread to serve)

Essential ingredients

Ham is the main star of this recipe. Sure, we need a few other ingredients, and you probably already have them in your fridge or pantry. In the next paragraph, read more about the ingredients and possible substitutes. Keep scrolling to the end of the post for the whole recipe.

Ham—Use leftover fully cooked ham or Easter ham, or cook the ham for this recipe (instructions in step one). We are using a local ham from the brand Z'dežele.

Vegetables—In this spread, we use onion and celery stalks, which balance the flavor beautifully and add freshness.

Mustard - adds some character. Use your favorite mustard.

Mayo - apart from the flavor, mayo also adds a lovely layer of creamy texture.

Cream cheese - cream cheese is optional, but we like adding it because it makes the spread creamier and adds a subtle milky flavor.

METHOD

  • cook the ham (if you're not using fully cooked or leftover)

Place a large pot of water on high heat. When it starts to boil, add the ham, cover with a lid, and cook until the ham is cooked, for about 45 - 60 minutes. Transfer the cooked ham to a working surface and cut it into 1 cm or 1/2-inch slices, then into 1 cm or 1/2-inch cubes.

  • Ham Spread

Add diced ham, chopped onion, celery, chopped chives, mustard, mayo, and Tabasco to a blender. Mix into a smooth, thick spread. If you prefer to make it even creamier (we do), then add the cream cheese and mix again. Adjust the season with salt and pepper.

  • Ham Spread

Transfer the Ham Spread to a serving bowl and sprinkle with chopped chives. Keep the spread in an airtight, sealed container for up to 5 days.
